Continuing my ever slow journey to clear my movies backlog, this movie was nominated for a bunch of awards back then though it did not end up winning very much. Like many other Hong Kong movies, this one also involves cops and thieves though from the title, one should be able to deduce that informants are the core of the movie’s plot.

Indeed, it tries to illustrate the relationship between informants and their officers in charge, though here it’s the same officer who is kind of a veteran at such operations. It also illustrates the kind of risks and dangers in becoming an informant to the crime fighting force, especially when they are part of a group known to have ruthless people in charge. The choices each has to make between righteousness, loyalty, humanity among other things sometimes isn’t as straightforward and easy but in the end a decision still must be made. As mentioned, the ruthlessness is also shown from time to time and these violence is certainly the reason why a restricted rating must be put in place to prevent those too young from viewing.

There are also side stories too, but they are mainly there to help bring out more of the various characters’ personalities and to understand what they are like better, apart from when dealing with their main tasks at hand. It may help in those aspects but that’s about all it does for those side stories. This is probably why this movie is, I think, longer than an average movie of a similar genre.

Overall, I think the core characters of this movie certainly did their parts well in bringing out their personalities even though they may have varied amounts of screen time or important moments to help them in doing so. The story certainly isn’t very pretty and the ending is likewise. Definitely not the kind of show to watch if you are looking for something to lift your spirits unless this sort of treatment actually works better for you. Still a pretty nice watch in general though. My take: 6.5/10
