Featuring a reasonably stellar cast in the Chinese entertainment industry, one would inevitably expect something good/decent out of it, and futhermore with how the story began and progressed, again one would be thinking that this is a good movie to watch, but at the end of it, somehow I felt like I was being trolled or something. If you look at it the other way, you could say the movie succeeded in something too.

The movie begins pretty promisingly, with neat magic tricks and nice cinematography etc, sets some kind of mood for possibly a serious plot waiting to unfold. At one point, it even reminded me (in a good way) of another movie, though that is a Western movie. But as one watches on, things begin to look a little odd, and before I know it suddenly the movie was more of a joke/lame type with some kind of attempt to include an ending to the plot that would be ‘epic’.

Well, I must say some of the magic trick performances are indeed nice to look at. I’m sure quite some practice was required to achieve at least that level of dexterity. Of course, some are visual effects. There were also some nicely written lines/dialogue (not sure if it was taken from the original written work or otherwise). However, when the movie tries to go the comedic route it just kind of self destructs. It’s not like it is something that you would laugh heartily over, so it becomes a complete waste of efforts setting things up nicely.

Overall, the movie could have been a lot better if it hadn’t taken a sharp turn like that (was it due to the original work?), or perhaps this kind of fusion and presentation is not to my liking. Sad to say, I would have to give this a relatively low score. A waste really. Good thing I did not go to the theatres to watch this. My take: 5.5/10
