Somehow I ended up watching this on Valentine’s (no prizes for guessing which year’s), this movie caught my attention when it had all the discussion, comments and its amazing box office run during the period when it was screened in theatres locally as well as in the region. Of course with that much ‘hype’ made, one’s expectations would inevitably be raised higher.

To be honest, the story is really simple, but sometimes simplicity can also be a sight to behold if done right. In this case, I would say the movie succeeded in doing that fairly well. On top of that, it involves a bittersweet story, set in high school life where many viewers will have their own memories of their youthful past and things that they could relate to. Well on the relating to the story part, I probably have less direct experience that will resonate with what is shown in the movie and I suspect that’s the reason why I didn’t feel that much of an impact as some of my friends have commented on the various sources of ‘information’.

Nonetheless, it is not difficult to follow and appreciate the story. Going through the funny times, serious times, happy times and more heart wrenching moments, the various scenarios and emotions make the viewing experience that much more interesting. Somehow the cast also managed to click quite well, which wasn’t exactly what I was expecting when I saw some of the supporting roles. Having good chemistry among the cast is definitely a plus factor and certainly helps the movie to be a better one, especially when the story and plot is pretty straightforward and simple.

Overall, it is indeed a pretty enjoyable movie to watch. It’s hardly any surprise that this movie broke several box office records for a Taiwanese film and why there was quite a bit of talk when it was screening in theatres. While it may appeal to the mass majority, there will be some people who will be unable to appreciate the movie. My take: 7/10

p.s. the soundtrack used during the course of the movie is nice as well
