First, a local TV station showed this movie during one of its blockbuster movie time slots. Didn’t watch it then. Then, my mom borrowed this from the library (now, that surprised me since it’s not the genre that she’ll watch) and I ended up watching it while having dinner and sorts.

I have heard generally negative comments about this movie and after watching it I can probably understand. For one, I am not a fan of the game franchise which the movie is based upon and according to the wikipedia article, there are notable differences in the movie and the game. That aside, even looking at the movie alone there are quite a number of lacking areas and flaws.

Storyline wise, I don’t know what the actual plot should be about, but in the movie, the plot is pretty weak. Also, our main character seems to be travelling to place to place as part of some pre-determined quest location or something. Just moving from place to place without a lot of proper transitions in my opinion, thus it was a little too “jump-ish” for my liking.

Visual and special effects wise, it is quite obvious that a lot of effort has been put into it so that the movie is presented in a manner that is somewhat different from many other Sci-fi/fantasy movies during that time or before its era. Well, some uses of it is not too bad, but at some other instances it just doesn’t fit in that well and it can be quite an ‘eyesore’ when that happens.

Action sequences wise, I must say it is quite disappointing. Apart from the not so uncommon ‘unlimited’ ammo and convenient missed shots fired at our main characters for the most part, the sequences lacked the kind of intensity and excitement.

So in the end, there really isn’t much (positive) about this movie. It was good enough as something to fill up time while having a meal and doing some misc stuff thereafter, but probably not worth the time just to sit there and solely watch it which is probably why many fans are not very happy with how this movie turned out. I suppose you can add this to the list of unsuccessful live action adaptation from games. My take: 5.5/10
