A film based on some Chinese notable historical events, it is also a fairly huge production with a pretty star studded cast as well. I’m not knowledgeable about the history during those eras, but I think the main ideas are probably mostly preserved in the movie. Anyhow, I can always treat it as some standalone story and watch it based on that alone, which I partly did here too.

There is quite a bit of story telling in the movie, though it’s not always the literal “telling”. It goes through some of the important events between Xiang and Liu, which of course includes this particular ‘feast’, where it’s more of a scheming occasion rather than a joyous eating session. There are also other instances of strategising against each other through events other than the highlight of the story adapted here.

Of course, there are a number of occasions where fighting will occur, blood will shed and violence will be shown. However, it’s nothing too much as you might have deduced from a mere PG13 rating. Anything overboard and you will be seeing a more restricted rating like NC16 or M18. Considering the circumstances then and the things that have happened, I find that the presentation can actually be considered somewhat mild.

Overall, it didn’t turn out to be as uninteresting as I thought it would be considering the lack of discussion nor hearing of positive comments like I do for some other movie titles, especially when this was screened during the end of year holiday season iirc. In fact there are a number of moments that I quite liked during the movie, for example during some of the ‘mind games’ part. For those who really dislike Chinese historical events or have difficulty understanding the language used may find it to be of less entertainment though. My take: 6.5/10
