You are (probably) not dreaming – I did really pick up a local drama to watch, only that it is produced by an external company for the TV station. Actually I have seen/heard that the other series made by this same company are generally quite different from the typical fare of local Chinese drama series offered but I haven’t gotten a chance to watch the others just yet. Well, the biggest drawing factor this time will be probably the theme of scheming and tricks used which at first glance reminded me of other works.

Granted, some of the early approach and background set up did have some similarities indeed, but they still tried rather hard to bring in their own style and variation while keeping it (slightly) closer to the local context. For me, the early parts are more enjoyable because of the high focus on the various kind of trickery and con tactics that can be employed while the later parts is more of a personal/organisational feud that needs to be settled.

Editing wise, I see that they really tried to make it cleaner, having better transitions while trying not to be too jumpy or draggy. At least, I see it is more pleasing on the viewing experience than most of whatever bits of locally produced dramas that I happen to see while having meals etc. The same could be said about the directing and camera angles used. It may seem like something small, but touches like these here and there make it a better viewing experience as compared to its ‘peers’. Lol.

The theme songs are also taken from (relatively) bigger stars from Taiwan and I would say that the picks are pretty relevant to the show, or how some of the things turned out. The use of instrumental track during various parts of the show helped to set a more pleasant mood and of course this method of presentation is much more common in serials we see in the region and beyond.

Overall, while it may be better than most locally produced drama series in recent times, I found the later part of this story’s development to be a little less enjoyable and feels rather forced on a number of occasions. Oh well, not too bad for a local production, but I think I would most likely pass on them unless there’s some weird occasion like this one striking me. =P
