rurouni - trust and betrayal

Japanese title: るろうに剣心―明治剣客浪漫譚―追憶編
Number of episodes: 4

Some info:
1) Wikipedia
2) ANN

The first of 2 OVAs, and I have heard several people commenting that this was a memorial animation that they have watched, especially during the recent live action movie screening where some commented that this OVA is much better. Well, I would say that this short OVA series is definitely quite a good watch and really does provide some insight to this character prior to the series.

As this is a prequel, it is good to know more about Kenshin’s background and how he became such a character that changed so much after the war. As the title suggests, there are 2 main ‘chapters’ and they are really quite aptly named. The storytelling that comes with this OVA is also pretty good, probably one of the most enjoyable I’ve had recently. I can see why many viewers have enjoyed this so much. Oh well, I’m just nearly 1.5 decades late =P

Animation wise, it certainly cannot compare with some of the recent outstanding works, but for something during that period, one can certainly tell that quite some effort have been put into this. It goes really well with the entire presentation and surely makes the entire viewing experience that much more enjoyable. It’s no wonder this was rated so highly and still maintains as one of the most memorable for many fans.

Even for those who have not watched the full TV series, they can still watch this OVA as it focuses on events prior to the series. The main thing that they would miss out is probably to relate to how his character is portrayed later on (in terms of timeline), so perhaps it might still be a good idea to watch the series first. Anyhow, this is going to be one of those titles that I will be remembering for some time to come. =D
