As part of my little journey to cover the animated works, the next in line was the motion picture. While the movie may have premiered more than a decade ago, based on my experience so far, I didn’t expect too much of this, especially when I think it is not part of the original written manga story. So I suppose it would be more of a standalone, original work meant for the movie.

From viewing the movie alone, it does have most of the feel the animated series gave me in terms of storyline approach. I guess the biggest difference is that some scenes get played back quite a number of times (didn’t bother to count) which I felt was a little too much for a standalone movie which isn’t very long to begin with. Story wise, it is pretty straightforward, and the approach really reminds me of something similar that has appeared in the animated series before. I suppose this makes it easier for audience to have a sense of familiarity.

Well, animation wise I guess it was a pretty good work for its era except for the excessive playbacks and of course there will be some action scenes though I felt the latter was much more enjoyable in the canon parts of the animated series. To be honest, I don’t exactly feel that it added a great deal to the Kenshin experience since it appears to be missable after watching it. At least that’s the case for me. Hopefully the OVAs will be much better as I have heard much more promising things about it.

p.s. dual audio still doesn’t go well with me. Original voice ftw…
