This is actually the 8th Naruto movie, the 5th in the Shippuuden series. For those who are familiar with such types of movies, they are usually standalone contents that is not part of the original storyline designed in the manga and they also happen to have some kind of ‘formula’ in order to push out more regular characters so that they can answer to a bigger fan base of the title.

With lower expectations, this movie actually turned out not too bad initially. There seemed to be a real genuine scheme that could actually work out to be something more exciting than some of the previous movies had been. Perhaps having not too much of the fan service element in the early portions of the movie helped out as it became an opportunity for the plot to be able to develop.

But of course, his friends (at least some of them) had to appear at some point and indeed they do, in the later part when the fight gets more intense. We get to see a lot of signature moves, which is of no surprise though they ended up not having much real effect on the outcome of battle. Lol. And another mistake was to fatally wound Naruto to the point of brink of death. As we all know that he’s the main character of the original story as well as that there are a lot of content waiting to be covered in the series, it makes figuring out how it will get resolved very obvious given the special mention to a particular skill made earlier in the movie. Kind of spoils the ending earlier than it arrived. Heh.

I think along with the main movie, there’s a short OVA episode too, though that one does not have any big connections to the actual movie. It does however, provide a window for some fun that probably isn’t suitable for the main storyline at the moment. A little bonus material I suppose.

Overall, as I wasn’t expecting too much of this type of movies, it turned out to be fairly decent, or at least it initially looked to be pretty good but soon became pretty much the formula that I’m familiar with. For those who do not like such kinds of spin off movies, you should know better to stay away. Heh.
