The pairing of main actor and actress was something different, at least to me. I didn’t get the impression that Ge You and Shu Qi would actually star in a movie since I get the feel that they generally star in movies with pretty different style/approach.
It turned out to be a pretty entertaining movie, but it may not be so for many. For one, those with poorer understanding of the language will unfortunately have to miss out on some of the witty lines and dialogue presented in the movie. It is the kind of phrasing that I believe would be hard to be translated yet retaining the exact same kind of effect. Of course, it is not so extreme as to expect vocabulary and lines that are of literature standard, but it is important to have a good foundation of the language to be able to really enjoy the lines.
For another, there are many things in the movie that are pretty subtle, or not even seen at all. It has to be felt from the actions and the acting of the cast, who really did a good job in conveying feelings even without doing it directly. The struggles of each individual towards how they handle relationships are also quite nicely done here. However, since not everything is done explicitly and sometimes the pace of the movie can get a little slower (seemingly) with not much ‘action’ happening, I think some viewers might actually get bored. And here’s where some of the witty lines come in, that’s why knowing the language is important.
It is not a smooth sailing romance movie either. And just when you thought you could expect a happy ending, the movie shows you otherwise. It’s not a sad ending either, but more of an ambiguous one, which was happily used as a leverage for having a sequel. So it’s not really a very conventional movie, and in fact it’s not a very commercialised one, even though it starts quite a number of members who have been in many. I must say this was a much more enjoyable watch than I had expected it to be, and that these two actually work/interact pretty well with each other. Not bad. My take: 6.5/10
