Keizoku 2: SPEC

1 07 2011

Japanese title: ケイゾク 2: SPEC
Number of episodes: 10

Some info:

2) Official Site (Japanese)

While it is titled Keizoku 2, and yes there is an earlier drama series titled Keizoku, it would seem that this series is not a sequel of the first series. Or at least that’s what I read from some forum-ers who are more knowledgeable about drama series than I am, as well as DramaWiki listing it under a separate article rather than in the same one, and finally the feel I get from having watched the entire series here. Yup, that’s right, I did not watch the original Keizoku, nor do I have the intention to go hunt for it. =X

Anyhow, SPEC in this drama is used to signify/represent the special powers that a human’s potential could attain in the remaining parts of the brain that are not used for memory etc. Or at least, that’s how Toda Erika’s character often likes to say. By special powers, it really means have supernatural/superhuman powers like superhuman strength/speed, and even to the extent of slowing/freezing time.

Ya it might seem/look/sound a little absurd, and indeed I felt a little so in the beginning of the series, the drama series slowly worked its way, bringing some interesting elements and some unknown stuff into the picture that made me curious about the storyline more than being concerned with seeing new people with SPEC almost every episode. I thought the ‘big villain’ would be the one having his way with time control, but turns out it’s not which I found it to be particularly weird and strange, as well as a little not very logical unless there’s something even bigger and badder behind the scenes which we are not able to see a proper glimpse up till the very end of the series. However I did like with the way she dealt with the guy with the supposedly godlike skill of having the ability to stop time for everyone else which made him almost impossible to hurt/touch without having a great plan. Lol, pretty creative method used. Probably the part of the series which I liked the most.

What that means is that the ending is pretty much mysterious and open-ended, especially with the short scenes shown after the credits of the final episode. For the original season, there was a movie later on, though I am not sure if it was related to its main series. However, for this one, it would seem that having a TV special or movie production later on to probably explain some of the open ended stuff would not be impossible. Though Erika’s character did mention at the very end of the final episode that there definitely would not be a movie production taking place, which I couldn’t tell if she was being serious or joking. Oh well, only time will tell, and who knows by the time I get around to publishing this entry, that would be official announcements about future plans or even actual screening/airing of those plans. Overall, the series started out to be a little strange and weird but grew on me a few episodes later only to be left puzzled and slightly disappointed by the ending. Lol.
