The recent increase in Wing Chun and related movies/media, this is another of those films that are revolving around this theme, but the focus is on the younger days of Ip Man which sort of forms the prequel story to the movies that Donnie Yen’s movies have paved though I think the 2 titles are not directly related commercially speaking.
So in this movie, we get to see how this master’s early years were like, including some of his characteristics. We also get to see more nationalistic theme, since it deals with some not so nice Japanese baddies as well. Another similar style would be the inclusion of some light comedy elements, though not that much. Something different here would be the inclusion of a little love web which has some focus though not exactly all that elaborated since the focus is still pretty much of the Ip man and Wing Chun aspects.
Acting wise, it’s not that much to look out for here since our main lead isn’t particularly good at that. Then again, I doubt that’s the focus to begin with anyway. Thankfully the fighting scenes kind of make up for it, which should have been the case anyway. After all it is a movie on a Wing Chun master. Speaking of Wing Chun master, I think the part with the actual master cameo-ing is one of the more entertaining parts of the movie. Lol, he’s really quite the entertainer (joker not very appropriate).
Overall, nothing too special about this movie, although I think some of the fight sequences are indeed quite nice. There’s effort put into developing the characters, but I feel that it is not of much importance during certain parts of the show. I guess it’s more of a production that is jumping on this bandwagon, while it is still very hot. My take: 6/10
