Well, according to some post on omy.sg, it seems that MediaCorp’s latest Channel 8 9pm drama has lots of reference to this particular HK drama serial 爸爸闭翳. Well, I didn’t watch either of the mentioned series, but from the very first time I saw this trailer (on TV) [embedded below], I could EASILY TELL that it referenced a lot of key scenes and ideas from a Japanese drama (which I have reviewed), titled At Home Dad.
Yup, not only many of the memorable scenes are being emulated, from the short 36s trailer, one can also tell the similarities between our local production and the Japanese series (dated 2004) when it comes to the 2 most important families’ structure and how they operate. Ken upon seeing the trailer, also agreed with my opinions and views almost instantly. Yep, that’s how far the similarities go. As for the HK series, according to this wiki article, it seems to be a 2007 drama, which makes it a few years later than Abe’s performance. Again, I can’t comment much about the HK one because I simply did not watch any footage related to it.
Of course, the finer details could be somewhat different, but the framework is pretty much happily referenced. Well, for one, I would think that this local production would be 20 episodes long, as with most of the standard dramas produced here. That alone will probably require some rework (or add-ons) since the Japanese drama only had 11 (iirc, lazy to check), which effectively means roughly about 12 episode length when compared to our local productions.
Actually, I did want to write an entry on this when I first saw the above embedded trailer, but decided not to. However, since there are “complaints” that can be easily found and seen, I thought I’d just add my 2 cents here as well. Haha. What I’m surprised is that the complaint about comparison actually came from a HK show. Perhaps it’s because HK shows are more widely watched by local audiences and also that I think Channel U has aired it not very long ago, thus “exposing” more people to this storyline. Or it could be that such a series is too boring to warrant many of the Jdrama fans that I see around to be catching on a relatively old series that’s without all those pretty pretty idols etc. Heh.
On a side note, this is not the first time Channel 8 produced dramas that seem to be heavily referencing shows that have been produced overseas. I know of at least 1 Jap and 1 Korean drama that probably played quite a big role in “influencing” the local production. Hah. Considering I don’t watch Channel 8 dramas, it does say something since I do know about such things without having to watch them. Lol…
Afterthought: Ok, maybe there shouldn’t be such a big fuss about this. I guess referencing ideas of shows here and there is pretty much practised, but sometimes I wonder if this amount of referencing is a little too much. What do you think?
p.s. Lol I think I kinda swayed away from what I had intended to convey based on my entry title. Hahahaha.

Who dares copies Abe’s drama. Kill MediaCock.
