I picked this series to watch mainly because it is more than just a baseball-based storyline, but rather it is using baseball as a platform to execute all the schemes, tricks and other psychological battles which was what I was looking forward to. It is only later on that I realised/found out that the manga is by the same person who did Liar Game. I suppose I do have a liking for such genres of shows. Heh.
Anyway, the main character used to be a “king” in the sport of baseball gambling, namely called One Outs. Utilising his sharp senses and observation skills, he is able to see through many people’s thoughts and intentions and might even be able to “manipulate” them into reacting the way he wants them to. Through some encounter with a regular baseball player, he is finally roped into the team with the purpose of winning the championship. It also marked his first loss in the game One Outs after hundreds and hundreds of games. Well, that’s the only “loss” you will get to see in the series. Haha.
His contract is also something that is very weird, tied in with weird conditions set by the scheming manager (who ends up being pwned anyway. haha). The only attractive thing about his contract is that he get 5 million yen for shutting out his opponents, but the penalty for giving up a run is 10 times the amount. So you can really guess what he’ll do anyway – shut out all his opponents and earn some insane amounts of money. Of course, even with my pathetic (near zero) baseball knowledge, it is impossible to be shutting out people every single time, much more so for a person who isn’t part of the professional baseball world. While it may be exaggerating to see his perfect streak, it is a good way to see how his tactics and strategies come into play through the various matches.
It is an interesting watch, at least to me. Some of the explanations to the tricks and tactics were quite intriguing and it did have some kind of resemblance in terms of style and all with Liar Game. Hehe, a pity it seems he has only these 2 titles under him (I could be wrong though) or I would be looking for his other works to see what other things he has come up with. For those who like this genre of stories, I suppose this anime is not going to be a bad choice. One thing to note though is that the artwork may not be exactly to the liking of some. Hah, but that’s not the highlight of the show anyway. =D
p.s. I hope the announced Liar Game drama won’t take too long to return.
