Starring Kaneshiro Takeshi to play the role of Death God/Grim Reaper or whatever you wish to call them, it’s probably one of the attractions to see this. After all, such characters are usually depicted in a more fearful/horrifying way rather than one with a handsome face and seemingly harmless person. Of course, another interesting thing about the show is that this Death God decides whether a person should die by interacting with the “victim” for a short, limited period of time to determine if he/she should really be sent off to the other world.

The movie mainly covers 3 of his “assignments”, and they turn out to be interlinked, which I kinda foresaw from the 2nd one since they dropped some hints here and there. The general approach is more on the emotional level, so for those who are expecting some kind of action packed scenes you are going to see none. You, do however, get to see some of the special powers a few times, as well as other fellow colleagues who are working on the field with their respective assignments.

While there’s quite a lot of attention placed on the “victims” and the people around them, the movie also tries to portray Chiba’s (the name of the Death God Kaneshiro plays) attitude and way of carrying out his tasks, as well as the slight emo that’s inside of him. He even complains about rainy days whenever he’s on his assignments, and yeah I kinda hate it too. All rainy day scenes, until the end where there’s the clear blue sky. Even Chiba was happy to see it! Lolz…

Well, as it’s a more emotional-centred theme, expect a lot of dialogues as well as some significant amount of acting and interaction between the characters in the movie. It could potentially turn very dull very quickly if you are not interested in such themes or can’t really interpret the movie it tries to present itself. Otherwise, I think it’s still not too bad an attempt with a different take and approach.

The theme song of the movie happens to be sung by Konishi Manami, who plays the younger female lead in the movie. Pretty nice. I think I heard on radio a few times before when they were promoting this movie back then. Hehe.

Overall, the idea and concept is something new, but the delivery lacked something truly impactful to make the mark. Not too bad though. My take: 6/10

p.s. I find the “telepathic” communication between Chiba and his partner dog is annoying and amusing at the same time. Heh.
