This drama is based on a manga by the same title [wiki link]. Looking at the brief description of the wiki article on the manga, it seems that the live-action adaptation made quite some changes, at least in terms of setting etc, but the main ideas seem to stay intact pretty much.

Izawa Riiko [played by Aibu Saki] is a girl who’s not very lucky when it comes to love matters, and is chosen one day as the perfect candidate to test a new product – that’s the Lover Robot [played by Mizushima Hiro], which is supposedly fully customisable according to the client’s preferences on many areas such as height, face, personality etc. It [or should I use he?] is supposed to become an ideal lover [in this case, boyfriend] to the client, or at least what the company developed this product for. Things get a little complicated when Riiko’s boss, Asamoto Soshi [played by Hayami Mokomichi] falls in love with her upon sampling one of her cream puffs in an incident in episode 1.

Heh, there are many more details about the story but I don’t really feel like going into it. Basically, it’s sort of a love triangle with lots of relationship issues here and there. But what’s nice about the show is seeing how the robot “grows” and “develops” further [from factory setting] – it gets a name, has his own will and ego, as well as being able to become emotional, something that’s supposedly not present in non-living things. Being a programmed robot, sometimes he does things quite straightforwardly and bluntly to express his love for his client, which may appear a little embarrassing and stupid, but people can see and feel his true feelings and all.

There are a number of sweet and nice moments throughout the show, even though seeing a robot and a human fall in love might turn out to be weird to some people. Sometimes the things a “simple-minded” robot can be just trivial things, but turns out to be the kind of nice things that I think many people tend to not bother with. Haha. Oh, and of course, there are also comedy moments when Riiko tries to cover things up or the robot does things with a blurblur smiling face. Haha.

I was actually touched by the ending, although I’ve read that some people actually cried over it. Hmm, I guess the last video clip that Night [his name given by Riiko] recorded just before he got permanently shut down is the trigger I guess. Haha, quite sweet lah the clip.

The theme song titled Okaeri, is sung by Ayaka. It’s actually one of the songs that I find to be quite nice among those of hers that I’ve heard before. Yup, according to the translations of the lyrics, it fits the show pretty well too, hence adding some points for this show? =P

Overall, it’s quite a nice drama to watch. Better than what I had expected before embarking on the show. Hehe.

p.s. Don’t ask me why there isn’t a female version for the robot. And you can read Ken’s post about this drama here.
