This series was actually well received during the time of its broadcast, but due to various factors I didn’t start on this until some time after its airing had ended. It’s actually quite light-hearted and funny (and a bit lame at times) on most occasions which made the overall viewing experience an enjoyable one, especially if one needs to get away from stressful work/study. Watching an episode or two will temporarily take those stress and pain away.
The story is about how this guy ended up as a butler of a very rich girl, after she pays off his 150 million Yen debt and is made to pay off by working for an estimated 40 years. Anyway, due to various ambiguous phrasing on the part of the male lead, things go into “misunderstanding mode” since ep 1. Lol. But well, more often than not, this misunderstanding provides a source for plenty of (lame &) funny stuff.
In short, the entire series is about the “adventures” of the butler and various other characters. There isn’t exactly a very concrete direction the series is heading in terms of storyline as the “highlight” of one episode to the next can be so vastly different, sometimes as good as being standalone all together. Heh. While the title says “Combat Butler”, it’s not always about fighting enemies. Watch to find out what I mean.
Also, the way the anime is presented is actually also quite funny as sometimes the characters in the show comment on the show itself as though they’re doing it from a third person/viewer perspective. Haha. Well that isn’t something new but I guess it’s kinda “fun” seeing such things once in a while. The voice-over narrator also provides some comical comments from time to time.
Anyway, this anime contains lots of anime references and parodies of some of them. Too bad I’m not otaku enough to spot them all. Could only spot the obvious ones like MAR, Saint Seiya, DBZ, Inukami, Hokuto no Ken, Gundam, FMP, Death Note, YuGiOh, Detective Conan, Haruhi, Bebop, Geass, Initial D, Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield21 etc. Lols. There are even game/console references and to Jdrama and movies?! Of course there are references to KFC, Starbucks and what not, presumably they are sponsoring part of the show or something lah. Wow… Lols.
Overall, it’s quite a fun watch though it can be quite lame and “pointless” at times. Haha. I guess it’s not easy to constantly come up with things that will satisfy viewers every week since it’s more of a comedy/hyper-exaggerated anime. Just a little warning though, 52 episodes of such genre may prove to be too much for some, and certainly isn’t easy to finish in a short time. =P
