I have heard some bad reviews done by Straits Times and other magazines regarding this show. In a nutshell, if you’re looking for a movie to see how Jack Neo “shoots” the government on whatever practice they have now, you’re in for a disappointment. Maybe there are subtle signs, or they could merely made it such that some people “think too much” and try to lump certain things together.

Seems like Jack Neo likes Fann Wong acting tomboy-ishly, while the main lead is somewhat sissy (think Just Follow Law). Hopefully he’ll change this style in his next movie cos I think it’s losing its effect. Mark Lee’s fake Malaysian accent does indeed seem a little overdone at times, but I think it’s still all right overall.

Most of the movie is conversed in dialect, so I wonder if it’ll ever hit the TV screens here. Even though it’s PG, some of the language used might be a bit heavy for some people. Haha, which is another thing that makes me think if it’ll be shown on TV channels here. I shall wait and see what the broadcasting authorities will do…

Anyway, many of the jokes play with words/dialect or the way the narration is being done. But you’ll be able to get a good laugh out of it when it’s at an appropriate time. Some are also due to actions in the show. In some ways, Mark Lee might actually be the right choice for the role since I think not many male artistes in Singapore would be able to say all those lame stuff and still maintain the effect there. Haha.

As usual, being a (relatively) low budget movie, the special effects are not very nicely done. The gunfights especially, is quite horrible I think. Though they did try to add special effects for the “bullet path”, it’s quite evident that the gunshots are so fake with little sense of realism in it. Even better, a bullet apparently can fire across the warehouse yet it doesn’t leave a hole in Mark Lee’s pants. Certainly powerful and selective bullet. Oh, and in an early scene, the victim lay in front of Mark Lee’s car, but somehow miraculously, he’s later at the other side of the road where Mark can see the face (when previously he should not be able to), not blocking the car at all when there’s no sign of anyone moving the body. Heh.

In other misc matters, in the “news” that Fann Wong watched on TV, the top right hand corner shows Double Vision’s (one of the company involved in the production) logo as what we’re used to seeing as the TV station/channel’s logo. Haha. Oh, and the words 钱不够用 (a Jack Neo movie) was mentioned at least twice, and “must follow law” was mentioned by the same guy who acted as the security guard in Just Follow Law. I wonder if those are done on purpose. Haha. Oh, Lao Zhabor makes a return in this movie. Lols, as usual she says/does some things that is a bit erm… “…” imo. Oh, and finally, it seems that either the footage Cathay got has a bit of problem, or the cutting of certain scenes isn’t very nicely done since it’s kinda abrupt when it jumps from 1 scene to another (even the subtitles jumped). Yah, I spend too much effort in noticing such stuff. Hic.

My take: 6/10. Though the movie somewhat lacks the blatant “shooting” Jack Neo has offered in many other movies and it’s not exactly that close to the heartlanders’ context either, there’s still comedy available, which is the main source of entertainment value in the show. I think ST’s low review is kinda too low. This movie certainly isn’t THAT bad. Most of you will probably rate it in between ST’s and mine, since I’m pretty lenient. Haha.
