This show marks my first full R-21 show I’ve watched, and I can clearly see and understand why it is rated so. Heh. But of course, while all the steamy scenes seem to be getting a lot of attention, the movie is definitely more than just that.

Storyline and plot wise, it isn’t all that elaborate since the feeling I get is that the focus is on the characters and the kind of experience and struggles they got through during this entire series of events. You can read a very summarised version on the wiki article. Though it’s brief, it essentially covers the most important events of the movie.

I don’t know about other places, but Tony Leung, and even Lee Hom seem to be the “promoters” of the show when their roles aren’t the biggest, nor the one with the most to show/develop. No doubt Tony’s character is gonna be the most important male character in the show, but I think the female lead is the one that’s the 灵魂人物 of the show. in fact, she gets the most time for showing her struggles and stuff. Perhaps it’s because of her relative low 知名度 that’s why publicity using Tony and Lee Hom are needed. Nonetheless, I think she did a great job in undertaking her role in the movie.

I’m not sure how much of the movie was cut for the NC-16 version here, but I’m guessing that quite a lot were removed so that those 16 and above can also watch. While it doesn’t seem all that important, leaving out all of that content is going leave some small gap in viewers though it is probably not that critical in appreciating and understanding the movie as a whole. I’ve always felt that movies ought to be allowed to show its entirety to best present it in such a fashion as the director has decided, but some of the scenes are a little excessively explicit when it is not really -that necessary- to be so. Oh well, treat it as something extra/bonus I guess. Haha.

And as expected, dealing with an era that happened many decades ago, but yet not that long ago, some kind of mistakes are sure to happen and it would seem that some user on Wiki contributed something. It sure ain’t easy doing filming of eras of the past. Hic.

Overall, it’s a good movie with nice acting from quite a few people in the show. Not surprised that it actually won quite a number of awards. My take: 6.5/10

p.s. i avoided that word on purpose so that i won’t get funny search terms on google that will return my blog as a hit. haha. Then again, there could be other words that’ll mess up the search terms. hmm…. wah new low of 70 for the year. it just gets lower and lowerrrrr
