Yeah well, year of the movie sequels. And so, this is the 3rd installment of the Resident Evil series. I’ve heard that some friends of mine commenting that this movie isn’t good and to some extent, kinda disappointing. So the logical thing to do while watching is not to have too high hopes for the movie.
To be honest, I was initially puzzled at the front portion of the movie. Alice died within minutes of the show, only to realise that she’s actually a clone. Lol. At first I thought I had something wrong with my memory since I couldn’t quite link the end of RE2 movie to the opening scene of this latest installment. But don’t worry, things will seem be a lot clearer very soon. I don’t really want to go into the details of the movie since most of the major events are already in the Wiki articles (warning: spoilers aplenty).
Onto something more opinionated. I think this movie is actually quite lousy lah. Not very much progress in terms of storyline, nor about Umbrella vs Alice. Ok lah, there are some things here and there, but it’s like so little and minor. The focus seems to be on the this Doctor who’s quite obsessed with Project Alice and the zombies thing, and who finally mutates to become the “final boss” of the show, and of course the surviving convoy of humans who are travelling through the desert.
Besides a lack of concrete development, the show seems to create too many unnecessary “scary” scenes, which end up not scaring you but rather using the amazingly loud cinema speakers to startle you (or at least it did that to me a few times). Then try to build up the mood, with the lighting and right background music, only to find that it’s not the case. Haiz. Once or twice is all right, but the number of times they did it in the movie is simply too much and uncalled for.
Right, as usual, zombies seem to have varying “intelligence” at different times of the show. Sometimes they just bite any part of the body they can get hold of, while sometimes they rather try to drag the person out instead of biting whatever limb “it” has caught. Lol, they are supposed to be just craving for human flesh isn’t it? Doesn’t matter which part they bite what.
Oh yeah, there’s 1 scene that the zombie SLOWED DOWN just so that the human girl in front could run off without being caught (she slowed down). That scene was so obvious. Initially I gave the benefit of the doubt that some kind of slow motion effect was put on the footage, but I saw Alice moving at a normal speed, so… Lol, really damn funny, wanted to laugh but was afraid that people will come staring at me.
Right, and the crate containing the “powered-up” zombies seem to be have some sort of infinite space. Hordes and hordes of zombies just kept coming out for quite a while, which I’m quite sure that the crate can’t fit that many zombies even if they were packed like sardines at the other end of the crate (since the entrance was shown when the door first dropped down and no zombie or its shadow was visible).
And there’s the unhelpful AI. Yeah, she’s kind enough to tell Alice that her blood is key to a cure for the T-virus, and informs her of the “problem” even though the facility contains the right equipment and stuff to produce a cure. So, Alice is led to this area where the “final boss” is located. It’s understandable that the AI can’t fight this boss, but at least provide some lighting lah. And lockdown places cannot provide some basic lighting (excuse to create “scary” scenes). As if that’s not enough, when Alice and the mutated Doctor is back in the room with the laser cutting thing, Alice’s clone must be the one who stops the laser in time after cutting up the Doctor and not harming the real Alice. Can’t the AI do something about that? Hic, how convenient for the show.
Oh and 1 more point to add: since I bothered to check out the running time before going out, I knew there wasn’t much time left and there was still the “final boss” to attend to. I was half wondering whether it’ll be continued in part 4 though I know it’s unlikely. And true enough, it dies in this movie, and quite hastily at that even though both Alice and it displayed their telekinetic abilities. Hehz.
And of course, the ending of this movie highly suggests (yet another) sequel , probably that will be staged in Japan. It might be fun to see Alice and her clones in action though. I wonder if they share a common subconscious somewhere and can communicate via telepathy. It’ll be like trying to “micromanage” a clone army of Alices. Lol. I guess the sequel will have more zombie hacking and slashing, and perhaps (closer to) a conclusion for the movie series.
And by the way, usual blatant “advertising” of the sponsors’ products can be seen. The more obvious ones will be the Sony products (handphone and desktop PC) and BMW motorbike. There should be more but I couldn’t really be bothered to keep track.
Anyway, my take: 5.5/10. For those who don’t want to spend money watching, just reading the wiki article. It’s sufficient.
