Evil Maths Scheme

3 10 2007

Ah, I decided to bring forward my weekly boring & narrative entry to today to “celebrate” the end of midterms (does not apply to quizzes). Ok lah, technically I only got 2 midterms after the recess week, which is considered quite slack bah, considering I’m taking 5 modules. Lol.

Yeah, had my maths last night. Yes, I can’t even call it evening when it starts at 8.30pm. Geez, that’s for the sake of accommodating every student taking that module now so that every single one of us can attempt that paper at the same time. The maths department walked their talk and indeed upload the solutions the very night, and that could only mean knowing what kind of score you got for the test. I guess they wont be returning the answer sheet since everyone pretty much knows what they had chosen/shaded. Got 8/10, which isn’t very good if you factor in the the huge FoE population which really likes to shift the bell curve upwards over anything else. Looking at the solutions made me feel sadder, primarily because the questions I couldn’t figure out are actually fundamentally simple and yet I was agonising over them during the test.

Oh well, about time to get over it. What’s more worrying for this module will be the final exam, which makes up the other 80% of the grade. And I think it shouldn’t be MCQ this time. Open ended questions are harder since there’s no way to tikam your way through and hope for some correct answers. Nor will you be reminded that your answer is wrong when your careless mistakes result in an answer that’s not part of the options. And most importantly, the topics behind are more difficult which makes doing an average question much more of a pain than the ones during the midterm.

Ah, next one. Scheme midterm. Had it like some 12 hours after my maths midterm ended. Yeah, the time between each test is so short. Gotta thank Jon Hay for his inspiring “cheat sheet” which helped me to secure 7 marks (I think it should be correct lah, even though different code from the suggestion solution). But of course, those 7 marks aren’t enough to save me from the unpleasant state that I’m in now. Looking at the suggest solutions after lunch wasn’t exactly very a pleasant experience. Though Scheme does not have a bell curve in place for its module, doing badly can only mean getting a not so good percentage for the midterm, which eventually affects the final grade for the module. Though for things like programming there exists several solutions to the same given problem, comparing my code and the logic behind the suggested solutions is already enough to reassure me that I’ll probably be slaughtered for those questions. I wonder if there’ll be some sort of “working marks” for some kind of logical effort put in. Hopefully so, then I can probably salvage a few more marks. Heh, I sound quite desperate to get marks. Sighs.

Maybe I’m giving myself some kind of unwanted stress by comparing with the more pro people, and by that of course dont mean comparing with the scholars. I wonder why that happens. I’m so slack yet somewhere deep down I’m still concerned about my CAP though I’m still not very willing to get down to business and slog through. Really wishful thinking siah (pun not intended, for those schemers out there). If anyone can really pull that off, then he/she can really be considered “godlike”. Hahaha.

So I’m “rewarding” myself by slacking today and not doing any academic work. Will have to complete the rest of my maths tutorial tmr though. =\ Hope all you guys out there work hard for your grades. Dont be slack like me…
